Windows 8.1 Features

1. Start screen

Windows 8 introduces a new type of Start menu named Start screen, which is identical to the Windows Phone home screen and is shown instead of the monitor on initialization. The Start screen acts as the primary method of launching apps and consists of a grid of device tiles that can be organized into columnar classes; groups can be grouped with or without group names. Device tiles can be tiny (up to 1 square) or wide (up to 2 squares) in size and can also represent dynamic content generated by their respective applications, such as updates and slideshows. Users may organize individual device tiles or classes. An alternate part of the Start screen labeled “All Applications” can be reached by right-clicking on the mouse or by downloading and viewing all installed apps grouped by their titles. A semantic zoom feature is available for both the Start screen and the “All Apps” view, which allows users to target a specific area or group on the screen. You will uninstall applications directly on the Start screen.

Windows 8.1 makes the following changes to the Start screen:

  • The “All Apps” section, now accessed with a hidden downward arrow or upward touch gesture, features a visible search bar that can display results for apps or other items. The section is dismissed by a similar button with an upward arrow. An option to display the “All Apps” section automatically instead of the Start screen is available.
  • On high-resolution display monitors with sufficiently large physical screen sizes, an option to display additional tiles on the Start screen is available.
  • Start screen tiles can be locked in place to prevent accidental manipulation of tiles.
  • The uninstall command allows Windows Store apps to be uninstalled from multiple computers.
  • More size options for live tiles on the Start screen: small, medium, wide, and large. The “small” size is one-quarter of the default size in Windows 8.
  • Expanded color options on the Start screen, which now allows users to customize a color and a shade of one’s own choice instead of choosing from limited colors.
  • New background options for the Start screen, including animated backgrounds and the ability to use the desktop wallpaper.
  • Enhanced synchronization settings, including those for app tile arrangement, tile sizes, and background.
  • In a multi-monitor configuration, Windows 8.1 can optionally display the Start screen only on the primarily display monitor instead of the currently active monitor when the ⊞ Win key is pressed.
  • Multiple desktop applications can be selected from the Start screen and pinned to the taskbar at once, or multiple desktop applications and Metro-style apps can be selected from the “All Apps” view and pinned to the Start screen at once. Windows 8.1 Update augments this capability by allowing Metro-style apps to be pinned to the taskbar. The Start menu in previous versions of Windows allowed only one desktop application to be selected and/or pinned at a time.
  • By default, Windows 8.1 no longer displays recently installed apps and their related entries on the Start screen; users must manually pin these items.
  • Windows 8.1 introduces options to categorize apps listed within the “All Apps” section of the Start screen. Apps can be categorized by their name, the date they were installed, their frequency of use, or based on their categories. When sorted by category, desktop applications can optionally be prioritized within the interface. Windows 8.1 Update allows additional app tiles to be displayed within the “All Apps” section of the Start screen.
  • The ability to highlight recently installed apps has been enhanced in Windows 8.1 Update, which now displays the total number of recently installed apps within the lower-left corner of the Start screen in addition to highlighting. In contrast, the Start menu interface included in previous versions of Windows only highlighted apps. Windows 8.1 Update also enables semantic zoom upon clicking or tapping the title of an app category.

2.User login

Windows 8 is implementing a new lock screen GUI based on the Metro design language. The lock screen shows a personalized background image, the latest date and time, device alerts, and comprehensive app status or changes. Two additional authentication options designed for touch screens are also available, including a four-digit PIN or “photo token,” which enables users to log in using some movements created on a chosen image. These gestures will take into account the shape, the beginning, and the endpoints, as well as the direction. Nevertheless, forms and movements are restricted to the clicking and drawing of a line or circle. Microsoft also showed that restricting movements has improved the sign-in pace by three times compared to enabling freeform methods. Mistakes will always deny the login and will lock the PC after five unsuccessful attempts until a text password is provided.

Windows 8.1 adds the ability to display a video slide on the lock screen. The app will display images from local or remote files and includes additional ways to use photos tailored for current screen size, to disable the slide display while the computer is operating on battery power, and to view the lock screen slide display instead of shutting off the screen after a period of inactivity. Interactive toast alerts can also be viewed on the lock screen. Users may, for example, reply to calls or instant messages received from Skype contacts, or dismiss alarm notifications from the lock screen. Users can also take pictures without disabling the lock screen.

3.Notifications

Windows 8.1 introduces new feedback types for Metro-style applications and for certain activities in File Explorer.

Toast notifications: alert the user to specific events, such as the insertion of removable media Tile notifications: display dynamic information on the Start screen, such as weather forecasts and news updates Badge notifications: display numeric counters with a value of 1-99 that indicate certain events, such as the number of unread e-mail messages or the number of available updates for a specific event. Additional information may also be shown by a badge notification, such as the status of the Xbox Music app.

The PC Settings portion provides options for globally blocking all toast alerts, device updates on the lock screen, or notification sounds; notifications can also be disabled on an app basis. In Settings Charm, Windows 8 provides additional ways to block toast alerts over 1 hour, 3 hours or 8 hour time periods.

Windows 8.1 offers a Quiet Hours feature, now present on Windows Phone, which allows users to remove alerts based on the time of day (e.g. updates can be removed from 12:00 AM to 6:00 PM).

4.Display screen

Windows 8 provides improved support for multi-monitor configurations; the taskbar can now also be viewed on various monitors, and each device can also display its own unique taskbar. In fact, options are available to block buttons on the taskbar from displaying on certain displays. Wallpapers can also be scattered through several screens, or each monitor can have its own independent wallpaper.

Windows 8.1 provides improved support for high-resolution displays. A mobile scaling functionality also allows you to re-size objects on your monitor to address viewing issues on displays with a very small native resolution. Windows 8.1 now incorporates DPI scaling per window and offers an opportunity to scale up to 200 pixels.

5.File Explorer

Windows Explorer, which has been called File Explorer, also features a ribbon toolbar built to view the most widely used commands for easy access. The “Up” button (which takes the user up to the folder hierarchy level) that was dropped from the Finder during Windows XP has also been reinstated. In comparison, File Explorer includes a new display section that takes advantage of widescreen formats. File Explorer also offers an optimized feature for mounting ISO, IMG, and VHD files as computer drives. For better management of files and folders, Windows 8 adds the ability to drag and drop selected files or folders from the parent folder to a subfolder in the address bar pane hierarchy in the File Explorer.
